Matacanes is the most famous canyon in northeastern Mexico: a full-day canyoning trip down the stream that descends from the Potrero Redondo area in the Santiago sierra. The route combines waterfall rappels, jumps into blue pools, natural water-polished slides and swimming stretches that pass through two caves. It is the strongest commercial outdoor experience in the region.

You do it with an operator or guide: the day takes several hours of continuous effort depending on the group and the water flow, in wetsuit, helmet and harness. Some jumps are a mandatory part of the route, so ask your operator for route details if jumping worries you. Good physical condition is not optional.

High season is summer, when Monterrey's heat turns the canyon's cold water into the weekend plan. The flow rules everything: after heavy rain the canyon is a no-go, and serious operators cancel or reschedule without hesitation. That cancellation is the mark of a good guide, not a bad one.

General access is through Santiago, following the road toward Cola de Caballo and then up toward the Potrero Redondo ejido; entry and return logistics are normally handled by your operator.
