Bustamante

Grutas del Palmito, 18th-century Franciscan Mission, and the iconic pan de pulque. Northern Mexican Camino Real.

~110 km · 1.5 hrs525 m elevation≈ 7,500 residents

Bustamante is the smallest and most intimate of Nuevo León's Pueblos Mágicos. Founded in 1686 along the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, it preserves the Franciscan Mission of San Miguel Arcángel, cobblestone streets, and adobe architecture. Its natural highlight is the Gruta del Palmito — one of northern Mexico's most extensive cave systems, with guided tours featuring ziplines and rappelling. The village cuisine revolves around pan de pulque (pulque comes from the sierra's maguey plants) and cabrito from the neighboring citrus-growing region.
