La Huasteca canyon sits about twenty minutes from downtown Monterrey, in Santa Catarina, inside Cumbres de Monterrey National Park. Limestone walls rise hundreds of meters above the canyon floor, with that late-afternoon light that has made it the backdrop of countless local photos. It is the city's everyday mountain: people come after work on weekdays, not just on weekends.

For climbing it is Monterrey's school crag: sport and traditional routes of every grade spread across sectors along the canyon, from beginner single pitches to big walls for experienced parties. Whole generations of local climbers learned here before touching rock anywhere else.

If ropes are not your thing, the canyon is walked and ridden: trails and dirt roads along the canyon floor and into the side canyons are regular hiking and mountain-bike terrain. Rappelling and rock courses also live here thanks to the proximity and the variety of walls.

It can be visited year round, though summer heat is serious: the cool months from October to April are the good ones, and in the heat the move is early starts or shade. It is a protected natural area with controlled access at the park entrance; you arrive by car from Santa Catarina.
